Archeology
After playing the archaeologist in the cinema, Harrison Ford went on to support the work of professional archaeologists. Since 2008, he has served on the board of directors of the American Archaeological Institute (AIA) as general administrator. His appointment is due, according to the president of the AIA, "to his significant role in stimulating public interest in archaeological explorations". Following his integration into the organization, the actor declares that "knowledge is power and that understanding the past helps us to make the present and the future".

However, this appointment is causing controversy within the profession. Oscar Muscarella, former curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and antiquity slayer, believes that the image of Indiana Jones and therefore of Harrison Ford is the reverse of what a true archaeologist is. Referring to the intervention of the president of the AIA, he states that “Indiana Jones is the antithesis of the archaeologist. He has in fact played a role in stimulating the destroyers of sites and the looters who supply museums with antiques ”.

Cependant, cette nomination suscite la polémique au sein de la profession. Oscar Muscarella, ancien conservateur du Metropolitan Museum of Art et pourfendeur du trafic d'antiquités, estime que l'image d'Indiana Jones et donc de Harrison Ford est l'inverse de ce qu'est un vrai archéologue. En faisant référence à l'intervention du président de l'AIA, il déclare qu'« Indiana Jones est l'antithèse de l'archéologue. Il a en fait joué un rôle en stimulant les destructeurs de sites et les pilleurs qui approvisionnent les musées en antiquités ».
