Consecration with Indiana Jones
To play the adventurer, the actor must learn to handle the whip and prepare himself physically for a grueling shoot. He wears the typical adventurer look for Indy, with a three-day beard and an old leather jacket, not to mention what will become his hallmarks, the worn Borsalino and the whip. He thus plays a “multi-faceted” character: sometimes courageous then romantic, funny or even fragile.
The filming of Raiders of the Lost Ark is grueling for the entire crew. During the brawl scene with a Nazi mechanic, the plane rolls over Harrison Ford's leg. He ends up with a torn ligament deep in Tunisia. But, instead of treating him, they bandage his leg so that he can continue to turn. Later, he seriously injured his ribs while trying to secure the stunt himself where Indiana was pulled to the ground by a truck. Regarding the scene where Doctor Jones confronts a warrior threatening him with a saber, for which an elaborate fight was planned which had required a long preparation, the actor, at the time of filming it, is not able to play: like many members of the team at this time, he is ill. To spare himself, he offers Steven Spielberg to simply fire a pistol at the assailant. The success of this short scene with the crew members is such that it is kept during the edit. Raiders of the Lost Ark hit screens in 1981 and enjoyed great success. Thanks to this role, the actor manages to surpass the notoriety acquired with that of the character of Han Solo and becomes a recognized star.

In 1984 a second film was released, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Indy's female counterpart, after Karen Allen in The Adventurers, is Kate Capshaw. It is Harrison Ford who, under the influence of Steven Spielberg, chooses her to play Willie Scott.

Pour jouer l'aventurier, l'acteur doit apprendre à manier le fouet et se préparer physiquement pour un tournage éprouvant. Il arbore pour Indy le look-type de l'aventurier, avec une barbe de trois jours et un vieux blouson de cuir, sans oublier ce qui deviendra ses signes distinctifs, le Borsalino usé et le fouet. Il campe ainsi un personnage « multi-facettes » : tantôt courageux puis romantique, drôle ou encore fragile.
Le tournage des Aventuriers de l'arche perdue est éprouvant pour toute l'équipe. Lors de la scène de bagarre contre un mécanicien nazi, l'avion roule sur la jambe de Harrison Ford. Il se retrouve avec un ligament déchiré au fin fond de la Tunisie. Mais, au lieu de le soigner, on lui bande la jambe pour qu'il puisse continuer à tourner. Plus tard, il se blesse sérieusement aux côtes en voulant assurer lui-même la cascade où Indiana est tiré au sol par un camion. En ce qui concerne la scène où le docteur Jones affronte un guerrier le menaçant d'un sabre, pour laquelle était prévu un combat élaboré qui avait nécessité une longue préparation, l'acteur, au moment de la tourner, n'est pas en mesure de jouer : comme beaucoup de membres de l'équipe à ce moment-là, il est malade. Pour se ménager, il propose à Steven Spielberg de tirer simplement un coup de pistolet sur l'assaillant. Le succès de cette courte scène auprès des membres de l’équipe est tel qu'elle est gardée au montage. Les Aventuriers de l'arche perdue sort sur les écrans en 1981 et connait un grand succès. Grâce à ce rôle, l'acteur réussit à surpasser la notoriété acquise avec celle du personnage de Han Solo et devient une star reconnue.
