BIOGRAPHIE 5/19 :
James Bond : 1962-1971 et 1983

L'acteur est choisi par Harry Saltzman et Albert R. Broccoli après que les autres aspirants
au rôle de Bond ont été écartés, le budget restreint contraignant les producteurs à engager
un acteur inconnu. Albert Broccoli explique que c'est en visionnant Darby O'Gill et les Farfadets
qu'il décida d'engager Sean Connery pour interpréter James Bond.

Le créateur de James Bond, Ian Fleming, émet des réserves sur le choix de l'acteur :
« He's not what I envisioned of James Bond looks » (« Il ne ressemble pas à l'idée que
je me faisais de James Bond ») et « I’m looking for Commander Bond and not an
overgrown stunt-man » (« Je recherche le capitaine de frégate Bond, pas un cascadeur
qui a trop grandi »), ajoutant que Sean Connery (musclé, 1,89 m et écossais) n'est
pas raffiné. Malgré tout, la compagne de Ian Fleming lui dit que Connery a le
« charisme sexuel requis ». Fleming change d'avis après la première triomphale de
James Bond 007 contre Dr No : il est tellement impressionné par la performance
de Sean Connery qu'il imagine un héritage mi-écossais et mi-suisse pour le James Bond
littéraire de ses prochains romans.

James Bond: 1962-1971 and 1983

The actor is chosen by Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli after the other candidates
for the role of Bond have been discarded, the restricted budget compelling the producers
to engage an unknown actor. Albert Broccoli explains that it was by watching Darby O'Gill
and the Farfadets that he decided to hire Sean Connery to play James Bond.

James Bond creator Ian Fleming has reservations about the actor's choice:
"He's not what I envisioned James Bond looks" ("It does not look like I had James Bond")
and "I'm looking for Commander Bond and not an overgrown stunt-man"
("I'm looking for Commander Bond, not a stuntman who has grown too much"),
adding that Sean Connery (muscular, 1.89m and Scottish ) is not refined.
Nevertheless, Ian Fleming's partner tells him that Connery has the
"requisite sexual charisma". Fleming changes his mind after James Bond's first 007
triumph over Dr No: he is so impressed by Sean Connery's performance that he imagines
a mid-Scottish and half-Swiss heritage for the literary James Bond of his upcoming novels.
