Elle accepte alors de jouer dans Vie privée, adapté de sa propre vie, sous la direction de Louis Malle. Le tournage a lieu à Genève, en Suisse. Au cours d’une scène avec Marcello Mastroianni, un pot de géraniums tombe à trois centimètres de sa tête, puis l'équipe est bombardée de tomates, de vieux cageots et de pots pleins d'eau. Bardot est insultée de toutes parts : « La putain, en France. Qu'elle aille chez elle faire ses saloperies. La paix en Suisse. Qu'elle crève. Des ordures pour les ordures. Qu'on rouvre les maisons closes pour la mettre dedans avec une caméra ». Meurtrie, elle ne comprend pas l’agressivité des gens à son égard.
